Yield stress and elastic modulus of suspensions of noncolloidal particles in yield stress fluids

Abstract: SynopsisWe study experimentally the behavior of isotropic suspensions of noncolloidal particles in yield stress fluids. This problem has been poorly studied in the literature, and only on specific materials. In this paper, we manage to develop procedures and materials that allow focusing on the purely mechanical contribution of the particles to the yield stress fluid behavior, independently of the physicochemical properties of the materials. This allows us to relate the macroscopic properties of these suspensi… Show more

“…The neutralization generates ionic repulsion between the polymer chains which adopt an expanded configuration, thus forming blobs that swell until the osmotic pressure inside the blob balances the pressure inside the solvent. The size of individual blobs is of the order of 100 µm (Piau 2007;Mahaut et al 2008). Due to its non-thixotropic behaviour (Coussot et al 2009), Carbopol gel is a good model of simple YSF.…”

“…For these reasons, Carbopol microgels serve as very useful model fluids for exploring and quantifying the LAOStress framework. The microstructure of these gels typically consists of highly swollen and compressed sphericalshaped blobs (of characteristic dimension ∼ 5 µm) which, at high enough concentrations, provide the material with its yield stress (Ketz et al, 1988;Carnali and Naser, 1992;Piau, 2007;Mahaut et al, 2008).…”

“…The influence of / on the HB parameters s y , K and k is not well established: some progress has been made recently in relating the influence of / on the behaviour of visco-plastic suspensions. Ovarlez and coworkers [17][18][19] demonstrated how the HB parameters of a suspension of monodispersed spherical particles in a HB binder could be related to the properties of the binder phase. The elastic shear modulus, G 0 , of the suspension exhibited a Krieger-Dougherty dependency on /, viz.…”
