Yield, mushroom size and time to production of Pleurotus cornucopiae (oyster mushroom) grown on switch grass substrate spawned and supplemented at various rates

The use of supplemented agricultural waste in mushroom cultivation can be one of the environmentally friendly strategies for poverty alleviation. The study evaluated the performance of Pleurotus pulmonarius mushroom grown on maize stalk supplemented with varying levels of wheat bran (WB) and maize flour (MF). A completely random design was used for the experiments. It was observed that Pleurotus pulmonarius was significantly affected by varying levels of supplementation, as 20% WB supplementation encountered higher contamination. The lower supplementation levels gave significantly shorter colonisation period with better mycelial growth rate (MGR). The 2% MF, 2% WB and 4% WB gave significantly higher MGR and faster colonisation. The shortest pinning time (TP) was observed at the first flush with the minimum of 2 days. Higher supplementation levels gave maximum yield and biological efficiency (BE). With further increase of supplementation above a 12% WB and 14% MF, the BE and yield declined. Lower supplementation levels resulted in quicker colonisation period and improved growth rate, whereas high supplementation gave better production in terms of yield and BE. Therefore, for the purpose of maximum production, 12% WB and 14% MF may be recommended while for fast production time, 2% MF and 2% WB are recommended.

ResumoOs cogumelos comestíveis são muito apreciados pelo sabor e qualidades nutricionais. Resíduos lignocelulósicos da agroindústria são excelentes substratos tanto para sua produção como para propagação do micélio (inóculo ou semente). O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar três resíduos oriundos do processamento de alimentos, palha de arroz (PA), sabugo de milho (SM) e casca de amendoim (CA) para produção de inóculo de Pleurotus pulmonarius CCB19. As sementes foram posteriormente inoculadas em sacos contendo 150 g de uma mistura de farelo de trigo:palha de milho:casca de amendoim na proporção 5:2:3. Os corpos de frutificação foram colhidos e a eficiência biológica (EB), produtividade e tamanho foram calculados. A semente proveniente de PA foi mais eficiente na colonização, com média de 43% de EB e com os maiores píleos. No entanto, o menor tempo para frutificação ocorreu nos cultivos semeados com sementes de SM. As médias de EB foram de 28 e 23% em SM e CA, respectivamente, demonstrando a viabilidade do processo. Lignocellulosic wastes are excellent substrates for their production and mycelium propagation (inoculum or spawn). The aim of this work was to evaluate three agricultural residues: rice straw, corncob and peanut husk to produce Pleurotus pulmonarius CCB19 spawn. The spawns were inoculated in bags containing 150 g of a mixture of wheat bran: corn husk:peanut husk (5:2:3). The fruit bodies were harvested from the substrate and biological efficiencies, yield and size were calculated. The rice straw spawn produced the highest body fruit, showing a biological efficiency of 43%. However, the least time for fructification was with corncob powder spawn. Larger mushrooms were obtained when rice straw was used as spawn. The means of the EB were 28 and 23% in corn cob and peanut husk, respectively.

We investigated the effect of chemically disinfected wheat straw on the growth and yield of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus). Various levels of treatments combined with different time (12, 18 and 24 hours) and dose of Formalin (250, 500 and 750ppm) and Bavistin (75ppm) were used, and the results were compared with the control. Compared to the control, almost all the treatments showed increased values, and among them significantly higher mycelium running rate, the lowest time from stimulation to primordial initiation and to harvest, number of primordial per packet, number of fruiting body per packet were found in treatment consists of 750ppm of Formalin with 75ppm of Bavistin for 18 hours. Length and diameter of the stipe, diameter and thickness of pileus, biological yield, economic yield, dry yield and biological efficiency were also significantly increased in this treatment. Wheat straw treated with 500ppm of Formalin with 75ppm of Bavistin for 18 hours performed best in terms of per cent protein and nitrogen content. However, weight of individual fruiting body As the sterilization of wheat straw using 750ppm of formalin with 75ppm of Bavistin for 18 hours could control pathogens and gave increased yield, this treatment might be useful as an economically effective treatment for the highest yield of oyster mushroom.
