Yield and Water Use of Siberian Wildrye with Ridge and Furrow Planting in Northern China

Abstract: Siberian wildrye (Elymus sibiricus L.) is a perennial grass that is widely planted in semiarid northern China, but yield is often low due to insufficient soil water supply. Field experiments were conducted from 2009 to 2011 to study the effects of ridge and furrow planting (RFP) on yield, evapotranspiration, and water use efficiency (WUE) of Siberian wildrye grassland under rainfed conditions. The treatments included bare flat bed planting (FB), bare ridge with bare furrow (BRB), bare ridge with naked oat (Ave… Show more

“…The soil water storage in the soil profile (0–60 cm) for the RFP and FP treatments was calculated using the following equations (Zhang et al, 2013): SW=truei=1nθi×Zi+θX×ZX×0.78×0.5 for RFP treatments; SW=truei=1nθi×Zi for FP treatment, where SW is the soil water storage in the profile (mm), Z i is the i th soil layer depth (mm), θ x is the soil water content inside a ridge (m 3 m −3 ), Z x is the height of a ridge 15 cm, 0.78 is the shape factor of the ridge, and 0.5 is the ratio of the ridge area to the total field area.…”
