Flor de miniclavel.Foto: M.F. Quintero C. RESUMENDesde la década de 1990 los cultivos de clavel en la Sabana de Bogotá se realizan en sustratos diferentes al suelo. El sustrato más utilizado es la cascarilla de arroz tostada pero, por la contaminación ambiental que genera su quemado, el riesgo de escasez y el aumento en su costo; se están buscando alternativas. En este artículo se compararon cuatro materiales que podrían servir como sustratos alternativos a la cascarilla de arroz tostada: cascarilla de arroz cruda y esterilizada, fibra de coco y escorias de carbón. Se determinaron, a lo largo de un año de cultivo, las propiedades fisicoquímicas de los sustratos, la productividad de las plantas, el peso de ramos, el análisis de tejido vegetal y el porcentaje de plantas muertas por Fusarium oxysporum. Los resultados mostraron que existen diferencias significativas entre los materiales evaluados lo que sugiere diferencias en el manejo durante el cultivo. El sustrato que presentó mayor productividad fue la fibra de coco, seguido de la cascarilla de arroz tostada, aunque no se encontraron diferencias en cuanto al peso de los ramos. La incidencia de Fusarium originó una mayor mortalidad de las plantas cultivadas sobre cascarilla de arroz cruda, seguido de la cascarilla de arroz tostada, aunque esta sigue constituyendo una alternativa sanitaria y de productividad viable para la producción de miniclavel, los resultados muestran ventajas en algunos materiales estudiados y que se podrían mejorar las características si se realizan mezclas adecuadas de los mismos, pero debe continuarse en la búsque-da de sustratos alternativos para este importante cultivo.Palabras clave adicionales: cascarilla de arroz, fibra de coco, escoria de carbón, ornamentales.

Ion imbalance in recycled nutrient solutions is caused by selective ion uptake of plants, which occurs at different rates in different growth stages. The objectives of this study were to investigate the ion balances in both recycled nutrient solutions and rockwool media using different renewal patterns for the nutrient solutions, and to analyze the subsequent effects on uptake of water and nutrients. Over 12 weeks of paprika cultivation, two different renewal patterns (week units) of 6-4-2 and 8-2-2 weeks were compared with a constant renewal pattern of 4-4-4 weeks (control). The nutrient solution in the reservoir tank was constantly maintained at EC 2.5 dS･m -1 and pH 5.5-6.5. The changes in the ion balance with the 4-4-4 week pattern were smaller than those with the other treatments. In the early growth stage, however, the ion balances similarly changed among all treatments. Greater changes were subsequently observed for the 6-4-2 week pattern. Although fruit yield and shoot fresh weight of paprika were the lowest with 6-4-2 renewal pattern, no significant differences were observed. Our results indicate that renewal intervals can be extended in consideration of growth stage for more efficient and practical operations in closed soilless cultures.

In the Netherlands since the late nineties reuse of drainage water is obligatory for all soil less growing systems, to reduce the environmental pollution. However, this strategy has some important bottlenecks. Apart from technical and phytopathological aspects, accumulation of Na, Cl or other residual ions could be a problem. Accumulation will occur if the uptake rates are lower than the concentrations in the input. Recently a database was established with the maximum acceptable concentrations in the root environment and water sources, for a number of crops. In all cases Na showed to be the bottleneck element. A high tolerance for Na not necessarily means a high uptake rate for this ion, as was found for sweet pepper. Water sources differ highly in Na concentrations. In general, for completely closed growing systems only rainwater or desalinated water is suitable. For some crops (rose, chrysanthemum, sweet pepper) the natural background concentrations of Na in rainwater is sometimes even higher than the uptake rate. Accumulation above the maximum acceptable concentrations inevitably should be followed by discharge of a fraction of the nutrient solution to prevent yield reduction or decline in produce quality. This will result in lower water and nutrient use efficiencies than required. However, the water and nutrient losses depend highly on water management strategies accomplished by the grower. Smart strategies were developed for discharge of drainage water as low as possible for N and P. These are based on the uptake dynamics of Na and Cl and minimal required N and P levels observed with different crops. These strategies have been tested for rose and resulted in significant reduction in the nutrient losses.
