Yield and Economic Assessments of Five Cowpea Varieties in Cowpea-Maize Strip Intercropping in Limpopo Province, South Africa

Abstract: Farmers‟ traditional cropping practice in Limpopo Province is to mix and broadcast crops at planting without definite row arrangement. Although this practice is very easy and cost-saving, it leads to low plant density, hinders farm input application, and results in low crop yields and poor return on investment. Strip intercropping, where crops are planted with definite row arrangement, reduces inter-species competition, optimises plant population, and increases crop yield. Five cowpea varieties i.e. „TVu 13464… Show more

“…A bigger yield advantage over monoculture is often indicated by the higher LER value. Aswe and Maimela (2020) [35] also reported an increase in yield, grain yield, LER, and yield when cowpea and corn were intercropped. LER, ATER, A, and CR were higher than sesame and were not affected by the cropping pattern.…”

“…Increasing the distance between row of soybean corn and decreasing the narrow spacing is helpful for light interception. Likewise, Aswe and Maimela [34] reported that intercropping the pathway system between cowpea and corn increased the yield, grain yield, LER and net yield. The highest seed yield was obtained in intercropping through 2 row of cowpea between maize plants.…”
