Yersinia enterocolitica AND Yersinia pseudotuberculosis FROM WILDLIFE IN ONTARIO

Abstract: Yersiniosis was apparently the cause of death of the beaver and the cause of liver abscesses in the raccoon; the significance of the isolates from the birds was not determined. Y. pseudotuberculosis isolations were from a crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos (serotype lA), two purple martins, Progne subis All but the Pekin robin were free-living native animals.

“…(Kapperud 1975), and Yersinia is typically isolated from 3–10% of wild rodents tested (see Table 1). Although it can cause disease in wild animals, particularly when under stress (Mair 1968; Hacking and Sileo 1974), most mammals carry Yersinia spp. with no histopathological or serological responses (Kapperud 1977).…”

“…Most illnesses are associated with raw or undercooked animal-based foods (especially pork) probably following introduction during slaughter and processing of food animals [5]. Wild animal hosts may include beavers and other rodents, birds, wild boars and fresh water fish [86][87][88][89]. Produce is rarely associated with yersiniosis, but investigators in Finland documented an unusual outbreak of Y. pseudotuberculosis linked to raw carrots [12].…”

“…Beavers (Castor fiber L.) are among more numerous animal species inhabiting aquatic-terrestrial ecosystems in Europe. There are also few papers, mainly from North America, which attest to the possibility of isolating Y. enterocolitica from beavers (Hacking andSileo 1974, Kaneko andHashimoto 1981). Moreover, no thorough molecular analysis of Y. enterocolitica strains isolated from beavers has been performed.…”
