Yellowish—brown changes on leaves of winter rye (Secale cereale L.)

Abstract: SUMMARY -Two mutants of winter rye (Secale cereale L.) (hs 1 and hs 2 ) with yellowish-brown changes on leaves are described. Both forms were characterized by a lower number of tillers, but the heigth of plants and length of ears were similar to those in control plants. In mesophyll cells of these mutants the number of chloroplasts and grana and the chlorophull content were lower than those in dark green plants.

“…Similarly to other chlorophyll mutants of rye the mode of inheritance of this feature was single-gene (NrLS- SON-EHLE 1913;BREWBAKER 1926;FIEDOROV eta/. 1971;HoPPE 1985;KuBICKA et al 1998;2000). On accoUnt of the fact that this type of chlorophyll change in rye had never been described in literature before, the gene determining the appearance of this feature was defined by the symbol tys after term transversal yellow stripes on leaves.…”

“…However, independently of the way the mutants were obtained the same genes were involved. For instance hs 1 and hs 2 mutants resulted from mutation of the same gene, marked as ync (KUBICKA et al 1998). Although these mutants were characterised by similar phenotypes, the expression of ync gene in hs 1 and hs 2 mutants was different on the level of chloroplast ultrastructure and chlorophyll (a and b] contents.…”
