Yellow Stunt, a Tobacco Disease Caused by Pythium dissotocum, in Southern Parts of Brazil

Abstract: Yellow stunt, an emerging disease of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), has become increasingly prevalent in tobacco-growing regions in southern Brazil. Major symptoms are moderate to severe stunting, yellowing of leaves, severe wilting, darkened roots, necrosis of stem tissue directly above the soil line, and plant death. Phytophthora glovera was first proposed in 1999 as the primary causal agent of yellow stunt (1), but since then, there has been no data or completion of Koch's postulates to support this. “…The three species of Pythium recovered from cannabis plants in this study have a wide host range, including many horticultural and field crops worldwide, e.g. beans, cilantro, opium, spinach, strawberry, soybean and tobacco (McCarter & Littrell, 1970;Watanabe, 1977;Kageyama & Ui, 1983;Bates & Stanghellini, 1984;Alam et al, 1996;Fortnum et al, 2000;Watanabe & Tojo, 2006;Corrêa et al, 2011;Romero et al, 2012;Tomioka et al, 2013;Rojas et al, 2017). Pythium root rot is also destructive on various crops grown in hydroponic systems, including lettuce, cucumber, tomato, sweet pepper and roses (Stanghellini & Kronland, 1986;Sutton et al, 2006).…”

“…Damping-off of tobacco seedlings is known to be caused by P. aphanidermatum (Fajola and Alasoadura 1974). Additionally there are reports of P. ultimum and P. debaryanum infecting seedlings of flue-cured tobacco (Wang 1997), Pythium myriotylum infecting the seedlings and stems of tobacco (Sigobodhla et al 2010), Pythium dissotocum causing yellow stunt disease of tobacco in Southern Parts of Brazil (Corrêa et al 2011), and Pythium vexan causing the shank rot of flue-tobacco (Miao et al 2014).…”
