Abstract

Without her commitment and encouragement, I could not have ever imagined going for a study to the United States, adjusting my new American life, and finally completing this work. I offer my gratitude to my 'another' adviser, Dr. Susan Birrell, for her continuous support for my reading project. I must also thank my friends, Matt Hodler and Nik Dickerson, who were always available to listen my concerns, read drafts, and discuss academic issues at Donnelly. I am so deeply grateful to my family. My parents and in-laws have always supported my academic pursuits with pride and encouragement. I am also especially indebted to my elder brother, who was always been there for me with his 'magic'. I thank my daughters, Min-Joo and Min-Suh, who grew up wonderfully in a poor family.
