In the few years that have elapsed since uranium first became important in fields of atomic energy, a vast fund of geologic and related information has been collected by personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey; the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission or its predecessor organization, the Manhattan Engineer District ; and, to a lesser extent, by staff members of other Federal and State agencies and by geologists in private industry. In this collection of geologic information are data of different kinds that bear directly on an understanding of the fundamental geology controlling the distribution of uranium in veins and that aid in understanding various hypotheses of origin for veins. Veins, as defined herein, are masses of introduced minerals in and adjacent to fractures and fissures; the definition excludes any implications as to crystallization temperatures or to special mineral assemblages. Veins may contain uranium largely in the 4-valent state, entirely in the 6-valent state, or, most commonly, in both states. A descriptive and arbitrary classification based on mineral content of these veins is used in this report; 8 mineralogic classes of uranium-bearing veins are established, 7 of which are known to occur in the conterminous United States. The pre-1940 history of uranium mining and geology is concerned largely with veins in widely separated parts of the world: included are deposits in Europe, South Africa, northern Canada, South Australia, and, to a limited extent, the United States. During and since the 1940's, many uranium-bearing veins were discovered in the conterminous United States; but, in general, these discoveries were completely overshadowed by the discovery and developnien't of a number of very large nonvein deposits in New Mexico; in Big Indian Wash and White Canyon, Utah; and in the Gas Hills, Wyoming. Very large deposits of uranium in northern Saskatchewan, Canada; near Blind River, Canada ; and in the Witwatersrand, South Africa, also were discovered and developed during this period. Hundreds of uranium-bearing veins have been reported in the conterminous United States, in perhaps as many as 900 different localities. This bibliography of 211 annotated references lists reports available as of June 1957. The annotations, arranged alphabetically by author, emphasize the geologic aspects of veins that contain uranium. An index map shows the location of vein deposits referred to in the annotations. Indexes are provided with entries listed according to author, geographic area, and subject. 328 SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHIES OF URANIUM GEOLOGY area, Montana and Wyoming, and the deposits in the Dripping Spring quartzite, Gila County, Ariz. According to Nininger (1954, p. 43), as of 1954, uranium-bearing vein deposits outside the United States had yielded by far the largest part of the total world production of uranium. Most of this production was from the deposit at Shinkolobwe, Belgian Congo, and from the Eldorado mine, Great Bear Lake, Canada. The Shinkolobwe deposit since its initial development in 1921 and until 1954 probably had yielded more uranium than all other deposits together (Nininger, 1954, p. 43). Other important foreign uraniumbearing vein deposits, some of which have yielded large amounts of uranium ore, include those near Joachimsthal (Jachymov), Czechoslovakia, and adjacent areas in Saxony; the Beaverlodge district, Canada; the Cornwall district, England; the Guarda and adjacent districts in Portugal; and the deposits at Radium Hill, South Australia. Many concepts regarding the geology of uranium-bearing veins are based on studies of the foreign deposits listed above, most of which have been known for many years. In contrast to these deposits, the important uranium-bearing veins in the United States except for some in the Central City district, Colorado were discovered since the mid-1940's. The study and development of deposits in the United States are in relatively early stages, and the literature on domestic deposits has not influenced geologic thinking as much as the literature on the previously known foreign deposits. Because of the influence imparted by the literature describing the uranium-bearing veins at Joachimsthal, Shinkolobwe, and Great Bear Lake, and because many of the following annotations describing uranium-bearing veins in the United States refer to these deposits, the following selected references on these three important deposits are listed below.
