Evaluation of water quality of nine boreholes and three open hand-dug wells in a rural community in North Central Nigeria revealed relative abundance of cations Na > k > Ca > Mg > Zn > Pb and anions Cl(-) > PO4(2-) > SO4(2-) > NO3(-) in the boreholes and cations Ca > Na > K > Mg > Pb and anions NO3(-) > PO4(2-) > SO4(2-) > Cl(-) in the wells. The major contaminants exceeding SON and WHO permissible limits were NO3(-) , Mg, TH, pH and Mg, Pb, TH, pH and DO in the wells and boreholes, respectively. They are attributable to anthropogenic sources such as domestic waste water and poor waste disposal and natural sources such as mineral dissolution from clayey aquifer which made the acidic groundwater unsuitable for consumption unless they are appropriately treated. Correlation studies revealed existence of three major mineral groups in the aquifer Ca-Fe group, Na-Mg group, Zn-K group, as well as a minor group Pb-group, and they determine the chemical composition of the groundwater and the ionic exchange between the groundwater and mineral-bearing clayey aquifer. In order to curb microbial contamination by Enterobacter aerogenes and Escherichia coli, it is recommended that proper latrines and drainages be provided while domesticated animals should be restricted from boreholes and well. Further, treatment with water guard and pur purifier is recommended.

This paper seeks to examine the JPTMR (Jos Plateau Tin-Mining Region) as an abandoned mine that provides land for housing by examining the impact of the tin-mining activities due to the presence of heavy metals and radioactive substances and analyzing the level and availability of these substances and their effects on human health and the built environment within JPTMR. Utilizing secondary data, which map out 10 different locations in the region, the paper highlights the level of radioactive substances (X-ray, beta-ray and gamma-ray) and presence of heavy metals in the environment. The results show that there are traces of X-ray, beta-ray and gamma-ray as well as the heavy metals such as Pb, As, Cu, Cr and Ni which exceeded the international standards. This is particularly significant as people use the contaminated soils as building materials for their homes as well as for farming and food production. The inhabitants of the area are often without any knowledge about the perils of the contaminated soils, water as well as air which is serious long-term human catastrophe. Drawing from international experience, the paper argues that it is possible to develop housing in former tin-mining areas but requires careful remediation and engagement by the public and private sector.

Water is a vital requirement for life and it is also an effective vehicle for the transmission of diseases if contaminated. Pollution caused by heavy metals is one of the major environmental problems that are imperative to be solved. Mining of solid minerals has been identified as an entry point of heavy metals into the environment consequently polluting various components of the environment such as soil and water. Bioremediation offers a promising means to reclaim such contaminated environment in an economical and eco friendly way. The focus of this study is to evaluate the bio sorption efficiency of cadmium and lead-resistant yeast from well water samples collected from Angwan Magiro, one of the lead-contaminated villages of Niger State, North Central Nigeria. Microbial enumeration of the water samples were carried out using pours plate technique, while physicochemical parameters were done by standard methods. Tolerance ability of the yeast isolates to the heavy metals was determined by cultivating on yeast broth supplemented with synthetic solutions of 1.50 mg/L cadmium concentration and 5.50 mg/L lead concentration. Based on the result of heavy metal tolerance assay, Saccharomyces cerevisiae was then selected to determine its efficiency in bio sorption of cadmium and lead in a rotary shaker incubated at an ambient temperature for a period of 28 days. Yeast cells were separated from solutions by centrifugation and the supernatants were analyzed for residual metals in solution using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Bio sorption experiment was carried out as function of solution pH. The results of this investigation reveal that Saccharomyces cerevisiae was efficient in the removal of lead with 99.54% and cadmium with 88.24% at pH 8.20. These findings suggest that Saccharomyces cerevisiae present in heavy metalcontaminated water could be an effective measure for remediation of the ecosystem.
