Effects of Drama Method on Social Communication Skills: A Comparative Analysis

This study aims to determine the effect of drama on social communication skills through the use of quantitative and qualitative research methods in a holistic approach. In the quantitative part of the research both the meta-analytic method and descriptive study were used. In the meta-analysis phase, 24 studies (2 articles, 19 MA theses and 3 Ph.D. dissertations) related to drama and its effect on communication skills and met the inclusion criteria were analyzed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis and the MetaWin programs. In the descriptive phase of the study, Social Skills Evaluation Scale was used to assess social skill levels of the preservice teachers (N = 386). In the qualitative part of the study, the data collected via documentary review through the thematic examination of the articles and theses were analyzed using the Maxqda 11 program. Additionally, in an action research design, the data related to the views of the preservice teachers (N= 60) and selected by maximum variation sampling were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed through the Maxqda 11 program. Both qualitative and quantitative findings indicated that drama has a positive effect on social communication skills.

The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of the creative drama-based psychoeducation program in adolescents on their emotional intelligence level. For this purpose, a true experimental design with pretest-posttest groups was used. The study group of the research consisted of 16 experimental, 16 control and 16 placebo group 12th grade students who are in a public high school in Avcılar, Istanbul. 20-sessions drama-based education program, two sessions per week for 10 weeks, was applied to the experimental group, while film and 10 academic education seminars were applied to the placebo group, and was no application to the control group. Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF) has been applied to all groups. Before the study, data related to the pre-test application of the scale was analyzed with the Kruskal Wallis-H test and it was determined that there was no significant difference between the groups. A meaningful result was found among the groups in favor of the experimental group. This result showed that the creative drama-based educational program increases students' emotional intelligence levels. In this context of the result, using the creative drama method in education and training activities can be suggested.

Yaratıcı dramanın temel bileşenleri lider, mekân, katılımcılar ve konu olarak ifade edilmektedir. Bu araştırmanın amacı, yaratıcı drama yöntemi temel bileşenlerinin sınıf öğretmenleri görüşlerine göre incelenmesi olarak belirlenmiştir. Nitel araştırma yaklaşımı çerçevesinde yürütülen bu araştırma olgubilim deseni ile tasarlanmıştır. On yedi sınıf öğretmeni araştırmanın çalışma grubunu oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu ile yüz yüze görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Görüşmeler sonrası elde edilen ham veriler betimleyici bakış açısına göre analiz edilmiştir. Sınıf öğretmenlerinin yaratıcı drama ile ilişkilendirdikleri kavramlar anlam içeriklerine göre; görsel sanatlar, yaşamı yansıtma ve kişisel gelişim olarak üç kategoride ortaya çıkmıştır. Sınıf öğretmenlerinin yaratıcı drama yöntemini kullanım amaçları; akademik gelişim, motivasyon sağlama ve sosyal ve psikolojik gelişim olmak üzere üç kategoride toplanmıştır. Öğretmenlerin yaratıcı drama yönteminin avantajlarına yönelik görüşleri; öğretim, iletişim ve sosyal etkileşim ve kişisel gelişim olmak üzere üç kategoride gruplanmıştır. Yaratıcı drama lideri olan sınıf öğretmenlerinin yaşadığı bazı güçlükler ve bu güçlükleri aşmak için çözüm önerileri otaya konmuştur. Genel olarak öğrencilerin yaratıcı drama çalışmaları içerisinde olmak istediği ve bu çalışmalarda keyif aldıkları yönünde öğretmen görüşlerine ulaşılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre; müfredata yaratıcı drama dersi eklenmesi ve yaratıcı drama konusunda öğretmen yeterliliklerinin artırılması şeklinde bazı öneriler geliştirilmiştir.
