Abstract

First time use of a heart assist device as a vibrational viscometer  Detection of the lineer relationship between thrombogenesis and blood viscosity  No need for an additional sensor, therefore the design does not make the system more complicated Figure 1. a) Thrombogenesis illustration in a heart assist device, b) Top view of heart assist device and viscosity control by electromagnetic excitation Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a heart assist device that can work as a vibrational viscometer which estimates blood viscosity that is assumed to have a linear correlation with thrombogenesis. Theory and Methods: In our study, the impeller of the blood pump is improved and thus it does not only rotate but also vibrate with a specific frequency. As the viscosity of the blood starts to increase, the force which is necessary to keep the vibration frequency of the impeller constant starts to increase and therefore phase differences start to happen. Results: Based on the experiments, a linear relationship between the phase differences and the viscosity of the blood is determined. Conclusion: By capitalizing the relationship between phase differences and blood viscosity, the amount of thrombogenesis and also ideal replacement time for impeller of the blood pumps may be determined.
