XY gonadal dysgenesis in a heifer

Abstract: The anatomical and histological features of the genital tract of a six-year-old Haryana heifer, which had failed to show oestrus, are described. The heifer had a 60 XY karyotype in the leucocyte culture. The external genital organs were absent and a small opening at the ventral perineal border acted as the external urogenital opening. The ovaries were completely hypoplastic and a uterus didelphys opened into a single cervix. No male sex organs or their rudiment were observed.

“…In the mid 1960's, Henricson and Akesson [1967] described 2 cases of XY sex reversal, these animals represent the first male-to-female sex-reversed cattle to be reported. Following this first article several other reports appeared [Chapman et al, 1978;Sharma et al, 1980;Murakami et al, 1989;Kondoh et al, 1992;Hare et al, 1994]. In the article by Murakami and colleagues, a Holstein heifer with a 60,XY karyotype and female characteristics is described: ovaries (but no histological examinations were performed), uterus and vagina; moreover, a feeble oestrus was reported.…”

“…Bovine XY sex reversal syndrome has been found to be much more common than its counterpart (XX sex reversal syndrome). Indeed, several cases have been reported in this species [Henricson and Akesson, 1967;Chapman et al, 1978;Sharma et al, 1980;Murakami et al, 1989;Kondoh et al, 1992;Hare et al, 1994]. Later, when SRY sequences were published [Payen and Cotinot, 1994], testing XY sex reversal animals for the SRY gene revealed the lack of SRY sequences by both PCR and FISH-mapping analysis in such individuals [Kawakura et al, 1996[Kawakura et al, , 1997.…”
