“…In the Namurian it is very rare in Europe, the only record being from the earliest Namurian of Scotland (Clarke, 1960); later Namurian strata in the same area failed to yield the genus (Currie et al, 1937). The genus has been reported from North Africa (Remack-Petitot, 1960) but is absent in Sinai (Omara, 1965).…”

“…It shows extremely patchy distribution, especially in the Americas where it is known from only 50% of the eight North American faunas and is absent in the two known South American faunas (Fulfaro, 1965;Stibane, 1967). In Europe it is known from England (Matthews and Moore, 1967) though absent in Scotland (Currie et al, 1937). It is absent in North Africa (Remack-Petitot, 1960) and Sinai (Omara, 1965).…”

“…Three years later, the goniatites of Skipsey's Marine Band at the top of the Productive Coal Measures were described by Mrs C. McCallien (Currie, Duncan and Muir-Wood 1937), when the occurrence of Bisat's Zone A was definitely proved in Scotland. In 1910, Smith (1910 recorded rare specimens of Glyphioceras truncatus from Arbigland on the Solway Firth, and there is an earlier record of Goniatites diadema (Jolly 1870, p. 282) from the same locality.…”

“…This opinion is based on the varied nature of the fauna, although there are differences from the typical assemblage noted by Currie et al (1937) The fauna collected by Kirkby (1888, p. 749) at Wellesley " about 35 fathoms above the Eight-Foot (Barncraig) Coal " would now seem to belong to the bed below Skipsey's Marine Band, though since it was collected from the spoil heap during shaft sinking, some of the fossils might belong to the higher horizon. Probably the Lingula band on the shore at Wemyss Castle should also now be referred to the lower band, though the marine band exposed in The Den, East Wemyss, is undoubtedly Skipsey's.…”
