XQL and proximal nodes

Abstract: Despite the fact that several models to structure text documents and to query on this structure have been proposed in the past, a standard has emerged only relatively recently with the introduction of XML and its proposed query language XQL, on which we focus in this article. Although there exist some implementations of XQL, efficiency of the query engine is still a problem. We show in this article that an already existing model, Proximal Nodes, which was defined with the goal of efficiency in mind, can be use… Show more

“…The query languages of [5,2,9] cannot express word proximity as in AWP and the same is true for other W3C XML query languages. The recent W3C working draft [14] and papers like [8,1,4] are expected to pave the way for the introduction of IR concepts in XQuery/XPath. Our work on AWP serves a similar goal but we have chosen to work with the simple concept of a flat document interpreted under the Boolean model of IR, instead of XML and the vector space model.…”

“…Several proposals [3,4,7] have studied techniques for combining IR searches with document structure. As an example, the query that returns (i) text elements containing both "Mr. English" and "Mr. Coyne" and (ii) its preceding and following text elements, combines keyword search with "sibling" axis.…”
