PurposeThe use of digital inspection or e-inspection of transportation projects has been proven as an efficient method over the last decade. A wide range of studies were dedicated to developing and applying e-inspection techniques and technologies. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive systematic review and content analysis of using e-inspection in highway construction and maintenance projects. The main objectives of this study were to explore the current trend and identify relevant inspection technologies and their applications for highway construction projects.Design/methodology/approachA systematic review of 172 articles from 16 high-ranked academic journals in construction engineering and management published during 2000–2021 was conducted. This process resulted in 67 relevant articles included in the detailed content analysis. The analysis involved synthesizing six main construction elements and work types, nine typical inspection activities, and 23 technologies.FindingsThe result of the analysis showed that among the six construction elements and work types, bridge and hot mix asphalt (HMA) recorded the largest share of e-inspection research. For the nine inspection activities, progress monitoring of construction operations was the highest focused area of e-inspection research. The most common e-inspection technologies are geospatial tools, 3D modeling, and unmanned aircraft systems (UASs). Camera-based inspection has existed for decades, however, has limited research development. The critical success factors in implementing e-inspection in highway projects are sharing data among different technologies, inspector training, and reducing the cost of technology purchase.Originality/valueThis study is one of the first attempts to conduct a content analysis of the e-inspection implementation for highway projects. The findings of this study expose knowledge gaps in contemporary research related to implementation barriers such as cost of purchase and operation of e-inspection technologies and transferring data between technologies.

A inspeção predial tem como papel principal a identificação das manifestações patológicas e falhas presentes nas edificações e sua correta classificação quanto ao grau de risco para posterior correção. Esta identificação deve envolver todos os sistemas, subsistemas, elementos e componentes constituintes de uma edificação, gerando um grande volume de informações a serem coletadas, processadas e analisadas. As listas de verificações são ferramentas que auxiliam o processo de inspeção predial, fornecendo um conjunto de tópicos a serem vistoriados para cada sistema construtivo, permitindo aos inspetores registrar in loco as manifestações patológicas e falhas, como também, as características técnicas, de uso e de manutenção da edificação, objetivando um maior controle de qualidade no desenvolvimento do laudo de inspeção predial, como também, a organização os dados coletados de forma clara e objetiva. O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar modelos de listas de verificações para os principais sistemas construtivos, de modo que sirvam como ferramenta na identificação e classificação do grau de risco no processo de inspeção predial. Os modelos foram desenvolvidos a partir de uma revisão sistemática da literatura em conjunto com a análise de diversos laudos de inspeção predial e validados através de 20 aplicações em edificações diferentes. Como contribuição, os modelos desenvolvidos apresentam as manifestações patológicas e falhas mais recorrentes nos sistemas construtivos e podem ser aplicados em todos os níveis de inspeções prediais, servindo como subsídio aos inspetores no atendimento das leis municipais, que obrigam as inspeções periódicas nas edificações.. Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to explore the feasibility that an ontological approach can be applied to formalize the construction regulation constraint knowledge in a computer-interpretable way, for construction quality checking, during construction stage. Design/methodology/approach -The ontological and semantic web technologies are used to model the construction quality constraints knowledge into Axioms/OWL and SWRL rules. Protégé platform is selected to illustrate how the construction quality checking, based on the Axioms/OWL and SWRL rules, is achieved. Findings -The ontology and semantic web technologies can be an alternative way for modeling the construction regulation constraints in a computer-interpretable way, and can be implemented for the regulation-based construction quality checking.Research limitations/implications -The approach is illustrated only with given specific technical constraints examples, the generality and practicality of the approach need further investigation. Originality/value -The paper introduces an ontological and semantic approach to model and formalize the construction regulation constraints for construction quality checking, and proves the feasibility by the case studies. The proposed approach enables the regulations can be understood and retrieved semantically by computers, which facilitates the using of regulation codes.
