Xerostomia in geriatric patients: a burgeoning global concern

Abstract: Saliva plays a key role in maintaining oral homeostasis, function, and health. The prevalence of xerostomia and its consequences are rising due to the increasing aging population, the effects of some systemic diseases, medical management, and commonly-prescribed medications that reduce saliva production. When salivary function is diminished, patients are at a greater risk of developing caries, discomfort in wearing dentures, and opportunistic diseases, such as candidiasis. The psychosocial aspects of xerostomi… Show more

“…Candida species are commensal microorganisms in the oral cavity in 40-60 % of the population and only cause disease when disturbances in the oral microbial balance occur (Teughels et al 2008 ). Oral candidiasis is therefore often seen in elderly people and is frequently associated with antibiotic treatment, hyposalivation, impaired local or systemic immune system, neglected oral hygiene, dentures and smoking (Anil et al 2014 ;Pires et al 2002 ;Shay et al 1997 ;Torres et al 2002 ). A number of antifungal agents are available for the treatment of oral candidiasis, e.g.…”

“…21 Patients with severe xerostomia will often complain of dry, burning mouth, which can be very painful and interfere with functions. 22 Xerostomia is normally caused by a local factor, radiation therapy. Ionizing radiation causes pronounced changes in salivary glands, and the degeneration of acini.…”

“…Among the causes of xerostomia, which do not involve a decrease in salivary secretion, are dehydration, cognitive and neurological disorders, oral sensory dysfunction and oral breathing 59 . There are many causes that can induce hyposalivation, the most common are the adverse effects of pharmacological agents, considered as a iatrogenic consequence, the most prevalent being SS, external beam radiotherapy, and diabetes mellitus (more than half of the patients with dia- betes type I and II have hyposalivation), among others [63][64][65][66][67][68][69] ( , among others [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] (Table 1).…”
