Xanthones from a microfungus of the genus Xylaria

Abstract: Chemical investigations of a microfungus Xylaria sp. isolated from the Australian rainforest tree Glochidion ferdinandi have afforded two new natural products, 2-hydroxy-6-methyl-8-methoxy-9-oxo-9H-xanthene-1-carboxylic acid (1) and 2-hydroxy-6-hydroxymethyl-8-methoxy-9-oxo-9H-xanthene-1-carboxylic acid (2). Compound 1 has previously been synthesised but only partially characterised. Methylation of 1 using diazomethane afforded the crystalline compound 2,8-dimethoxy-6-methyl-9-oxo-9H-xanthene-1-carboxylic acid… Show more

“…Xanthones and partially hydrogenated di-or tetrahydroxanthones are widespread classes of natural products [2] with considerable bioactivity [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] that occur in fungi, [9,[12][13][14] plants, [15][16][17][18] ferns, [19] and lichens. [20,21] Due to their pronounced toxicity, they are classified as mycotoxins.…”

“…The Xylariaceae fungi area rich source of secondary metabolites, including the sesquiterpenexy larenal obtained from Xylaria persicaria, [32] xylactam, a nitrogencontaining compound obtained from fruiting bodies of X. euglossa; and xanthone derivatives obtained from Xylariasp [33] . The xanthones area class of natural products with several pharmacological properties, such as anti-inflammatory, [34] antimicrobial, [35] antioxidants, [36] antifungal [37] and anticancer activities [38] .…”

“…The study leadered by Healy et al (2004) resulted on the isolation of xanthones, compounds isolated from endophytic fungi identified as Xylaria sp. The fungus isolated from Glochidion ferdinandi plant, and the metabolites extracted showed important pharmacological activities (Peres & Nagem, 1996;Peres et al, 2000) as for example, anti-inflammatory (Lin et al, 1996), antimicrobial (Malet-Cascon et al, 2003), antioxidants (Minami et al, 1994), antifungical (Rocha et al, 1994) e anticancer properties (Ho et al, 2002).…”
