Xanthene‐Based Oligothiophene‐Layered Polymers

Abstract: We synthesized xanthene‐based oligothiophene‐layered polymers containing bithiophenes, terthiophenes, quaterthiophenes and quinquethiophenes by the Suzuki‐Miyaura coupling reaction. The polymers were characterized by various spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. They were well soluble in common organic solvents and thermally stable. Effective π‐π interactions among the layered oligothiophene units in the polymer backbone were not observed in the ground state as well as in the excited state. A possible app… Show more

“…Xanthene-containing molecules have been widely studied due to their numerous applications that take advantage of their biological and pharmacological properties. They have also attracted interest due to their interesting photophysical properties, as some derivatives can be used as pigments, dyes, and biological sensors. In addition, xanthene fragments have been used as an essential constituent in polymers chains. Xanthene fragments are critical components for constructing polymer layered p-electron systems, as well as polymers for gas separations or sorption, and membranes. ,, Among those, fluorine-containing xanthenes can be used to prepare high-performance heteroaromatic polymers, such as polyimides, polyarylethers, and polybenzoxazoles . Particularly, the introduction of −CF 3 groups in the structure has been one of the most widely used strategies to obtain solution-processable polymers, a highly desired property that enables attractive applications. , …”

“…Despite the factt hat many heteroaromatic compounds have been explored, comparatively little attention has been devoted to xanthene derivatives;m ainly materials based on rhodamine, [5] spiroxanthene, [6] and dibenzoxanthene [7] have been investigated. The first report on xanthene-based polymers was published in 2010b yM orisaki et al, [8] who described 4,5-substitutedx anthene oligomers as highly thermally stable, layered, and hole-transporting materials. More recently, 9 ,9-dimethylxanthenew as proposed as ab ridge forp erylene multichromophore covalentd imers.…”
