In the present work, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were synthesized in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) which is a biocompatible agent in living systems. The sub-chronic effects of ZnO-NPs were investigated based on biochemical parameters and histological changes applied to Rattus norvegicus. The structural, morphology, and size characterization of nanoparticles were studied by applying techniques as XRD, SEM, FTIR, and TEM. 8-week intraperitoneal injection of ZnO-NPs at a dose of 100 mg/kg leads to significant changes in liver enzymes, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and tissue histopathological changes. The animal group which was treated with 50 mg/kg of ZnO-NPs presented elevated blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels, but the liver enzymes and liver histopathology were found to be in normal level. The rats exposed to increasing dose of ZnO-NPs (100 mg/kg) showed necrosis of germinal epithelium and sertoli cells in the seminiferous tubules. The current study clearly demonstrated the dose-dependent toxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles.

The ongoing biomedical nanotechnology has intrigued increasingly intense interests in cerium oxide nanoparticles, ceria nanoparticles or nano-ceria (CeO 2-NPs). Their remarkable vacancy-oxygen defect (VO) facilitates the redox process and catalytic activity. The verification has illustrated that CeO 2-NPs, a nanozyme based on inorganic nanoparticles, can achieve the anti-inflammatory effect, cancer resistance, and angiogenesis. Also, they can well complement other materials in tissue engineering (TE). Pertinent to the properties of CeO 2-NPs and the pragmatic biosynthesis methods, this review will emphasize the recent application of CeO 2-NPs to orthopedic biomedicine, in particular, the bone tissue engineering (BTE). The presentation, assessment, and outlook of the orthopedic potential and shortcomings of CeO 2-NPs in this review expect to provide reference values for the future research and development of therapeutic agents based on CeO 2-NPs.

Background Nanoceria has recently received much attention, because of its widespread biomedical applications, including antibacterial, antioxidant and anticancer activity, drug/gene delivery systems, anti-diabetic property, and tissue engineering. Main body Nanoceria exhibits excellent antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria via the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In healthy cells, it acts as an antioxidant by scavenging ROS (at physiological pH). Thus, it protects them, while in cancer cells (under low pH environment) it acts as pro-oxidant by generating ROS and kills them. Nanoceria has also been effectively used as a carrier for targeted drug and gene delivery in vitro and in vivo models. Besides, nanoceria can also act as an antidiabetic agent and confer protection towards diabetes-associated organ pathophysiology via decreasing the ROS level in diabetic subjects. Nanoceria also possesses excellent potential in the field of tissue engineering. In this review, firstly, we have discussed the different methods used for the synthesis of nanoceria as these are very important to control the size, shape and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ratio of the particles upon which the physical, chemical, and biological properties depend. Secondly, we have extensively reviewed the different biomedical applications of nanoceria with probable mechanisms based on the literature reports. Conclusion The outcome of this review will improve the understanding about the different synthetic procedures and biomedical applications of nanoceria, which should, in turn, lead to the design of novel clinical interventions associated with various health disorders.
