Abstract: Bleeding from esophagogastric varices is a potentially deadly complication in patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis. The aim of this study is to establish indicators of variceal bleeding. We studied 40 patients with compensated hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and varices, analyzing four endoscopic (variceal size, red color signs, fundic varices, and congestive gastropathy), nine ultrasonographic (right and left hepatic lobe size, periportal and gallbladder wall thickness, portal and splenic veins diameter,… Show more

“…We identified advanced periportal fibrosis, large varices, ascites, and jaundice as independent predictors of UGIB. Others have reported similar findings [ 14 , 23 , 33 35 ]. Our results also showed individuals with a close family member with HS were more likely to experience more episodes of UGIB.…”

“…PZQ has also been shown to decrease portal vein diameter and to reduce the prevalence of esophageal varices [ 3 8 ]. Predictors of successful treatment of periportal fibrosis following PZQ use include female gender, young age, mild-to-moderate periportal fibrosis, hepatitis B surface antigen-negative status, low S. mansoni re-infection rates, and genetics or family pedigree [ 9 14 ].Whereas PZQ is considered very safe, over the last 15 years, a number of drug safety concerns have emerged [ 2 , 7 ]. Most of these have been highlighted in a number of reports from clinical studies, anthropological studies, and drug information leaflets [ 5 , 15 – 21 ].…”

“…[6] The parameters associated with variceal bleeding in patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis are endoscopic (variceal size, red signs, congestive gastropathy and fundic varices) and ultrasonographic (portal vein diameter and periportal thickness). [7] However, there are no consistent noninvasive parameters for the diagnosis of esophageal varices in this specific patient population.…”
