X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Study of Cobalt Supported Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes Prepared by Different Precursors

Abstract: The effect of cobalt precursor on the structure of Co supported multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). MWCNTs were treated with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids and decorated with cobalt and/or cobalt oxides via aqueous impregnation solutions of cobalt nitrate or cobalt acetate followed by reduction in hydrogen. XPS was mainly used to investigate the phase of cobalt on MWCNTs after reduction with H 2 flow at 400 o C for 2 h. Higher cobalt-nano… Show more

“…This result is also justified by the presence of satellite peaks (shoulders) at ca. 788 eV and 803 eV (Lee et al, 2007;Girardon et al, 2007). The results shown in the case of cobalt are similar to those observed for molybdenum and clearly indicate that metal oxide particles are deposited preferentially on the surface of SiO 2 .…”

“…781.5 eV and 797.4 eV (Fig. 4a), assigned to the spin-orbit splitting of Co and specifically to a mixture of Co 2+ and Co 3+ due to the presence of Co 3 O 4 (Lee et al, 2007). This result is also justified by the presence of satellite peaks (shoulders) at ca.…”

“…The survey spectra were obtained at 50 eV of pass energy and 0.5 eV of step size. Core level spectra were also obtained at 20 and 0.05 eV of pass energy and step size, respectively [17].…”

“…The high-resolution spectra of the Al2p contain 3 main peaks at binding energy of 72.8, 75.1 and 78.23 eV assigned to Al, Al-O, and Al-S, respectively 22,76 . C 1 s peak can be deconvoluted into five species, the peak corresponding to the C-C/C-H bond with hybridization of sp2 (284.56 eV) [77][78][79][80] , the peak at the binding energy of 285.56 eV is associated with the covalent bond of C-S 79,81 , and the sp2 C-N bond appears at 286.53 eV [77][78][79][80] . Also, based on the literature, the peaks at the binding energy of 287.78 and 290.35 eV could be due to the formation of S-C-N and S-C-S bonds on the aluminum substrate surface, respectively 82 .…”
