X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigations of Y3Al5O12:Yb single crystal

Abstract: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to study the chemical composition and electronic structure of the Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Yb (YAG:Yb) crystals. The contamination of the crystal with carbon and oxygen in the broken under UHV sample was found. The dopant concentration of Yb, in the mixed valence state, was determined as 12 %. The aluminium concentration is lower than a nominal value. The chemical shift analysis shows more ionic bond of Y-O than Al-O.

“…All samples exhibited an increased amount of oxygen and yttrium and reduced amount of aluminum in relation to the nominal value. As in earlier measurements, lower content of aluminum ions and excess of oxygen ions for "as grown" YAG:Yb crystal was found [5]. The possible explanation is the presence of the YAG blocks separated by yttrium oxide layers.…”

“…binding energies of the Tb, Al, O, and Ce were well in agreement with reported values [16]. The Ce 3d feature in (d) shows a complex structure consisting of Ce 3d 5/2 and Ce 3d 3/2 spin-orbit doublet around 885 and 904 eV, respectively, which is a characteristic property of the Ce 3+ ion [17].…”

“…1 Finally, the actual composition of Nd:YAG is improved in ceramics with respect to crystals in which, depending on the growth procedure, a nonhomogeneous distribution of yttrium and aluminum can be induced ͑as it could be the case of the Nd:YAG crystals grown by the Czochralski technique͒. 10,11 As a drawback, the main critical point of Nd:YAG ceramics with respect to crystals is the presence of a relevant density of grain boundaries. These grain boundaries could deteriorate the properties of Nd:YAG ceramics since they can act as scattering centers for both phonons and photons.…”
