X-RAY MONITORING OF GRAVITATIONAL LENSES WITHCHANDRA

Abstract: We present Chandra monitoring data for six gravitationally lensed quasars: QJ 0158−4325, HE 0435−1223, SDSS 0924+0219, SDSS 1004+4112, HE 1104−1805, and Q 2237+0305. X-ray microlensing variability is detected in all six lenses with high confidence. We furthermore detect energy-dependent microlensing in HE 0435−1223, SDSS 0924+0219, SDSS 1004+4112, and Q 2237+0305. Through a detailed spectral analysis for each lens we find that simple power-law models plus Gaussian emission lines give good fits to the spectra. … Show more

“…Finally, there is the relationship between the dust-to-gas ratio (δ DGR ) and metallicity seen in nearby galaxies (e.g., Issa et al 1990;Dwek 1998;Edmunds 2001;Inoue 2003;; Leroy et al 2011). Attempts to measure the dust-to-gas ratios of high-redshift galaxies support a similar correlation, as well as a trend toward smaller δ DGR at higher redshifts (Saintonge et al 2013;Chen et al 2013).…”

“…It is now accepted both from observations and interstellar medium evolution models that δ DGR scales linearly with the oxygen abundance (e.g., Issa et al 1990;Dwek 1998;Edmunds 2001;Inoue 2003;Leroy et al 2011;Saintonge et al 2013;Chen et al 2013). Nevertheless, the measurement of the dust-to-gas mass ratio, in particular, in highredshift galaxies remains very uncertain because of a number of assumptions that need to be made to achieve a δ DGR measurement.…”

“…The microlensed sample is treated differently as the measurement of the physical size of the X-ray emitting region is already non-dimensionless and can be used to calculate ℓ directly, the black hole mass is therefore not required. We assume further the highest energy bin in the Chandra spectra shown in Chen et al (2012) is a lower limit on the high-energy cut-off. This is them corrected for redshift.…”

“…This is them corrected for redshift. Finally, for the coronal luminosities of the lensed quasars we use the 0.2-50 keV luminosities reported in the Chen et al (2012) paper. These objects serve to show that distant quasars operate at values of ℓ within the range 10-100 or greater; NuSTAR observations will be required to measure their expected cutoffs and thus Θ values.…”
