Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pseudocolor filter in micro-computed tomography (CT) images for the detection of proximal and occlusal caries lesions in primary molars. Materials and methods:For this in vitro analysis, 26 extracted human primary teeth were scanned using a compact micro-CT device (Skyscan 1172, Bruker micro-CT, Kontich, Belgium) and the projection images were reconstructed into cross-sectional slices (NRecon v.1.6.9, Bruker micro-CT, Kontich, Belgium). The original and pseudocolor images were evaluated twice by three calibrated radiologists. The tooth surfaces were scored according to Mejàre et al. criteria. The agreement was assessed by the Kappa coefficient, and the Chi-square test was used to evaluate the association between radiolucent lesion depth in enamel and dentin.Results: There was a good intra-observer agreement for detecting proximal caries lesions with or without using pseudocolor filter (k >0.60). The inter-examiner agreement had similar results, and the agreement rates were good or moderate for the proximal surfaces. There were no statistically significant differences between the original and pseudocolor images (p >0.05). The pseudocolor filter showed high sensitivity and specificity when compared with the original image with the exception of the occlusal face in enamel. Conclusion:The pseudocolor filter appears to be a promising enhancement tool for micro-CT images used for the detection of caries lesions in primary molars; even if it was not significantly different from the original images. Clinical significance:The pseudocolor filter converts grey scale images into color images. It is present in micro-CT software and must increase the diagnostic capacity of detecting caries lesion in occlusal and proximal surfaces.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate dentin mineral density before and after caries removal with the traditional caries removal technique and chemo-mechanical method, with or without the use of caries detection dye. Our null hypothesis was that the chemo-mechanical method with minimally invasive treatment would achieve an effect similar to that of conservative pediatric dentistry treatment. Materials & Methods: Forty-eight medium-sized, interfacial decayed primary molar teeth without pulpal perforation were selected. Two groups were formed by Papacarie Duo and conventional method; then four sub-groups were formed by two caries detection dye applied or not applied groups, twelve teeth were randomly divided into each group. The teeth were then treated with chemo mechanical and traditional caries removal approach. Teeth were scanned with the same voxel sizes using micro-computed tomography images to figure out the difference dentin mineral density and to calculate the removed dentinal volume after chemo-mechanical or traditional method application. Results: The results showed increase of cavity volume in the chemo-mechanical and traditional method groups. No significant difference was found for cavity volume and dentinal carious volume in both groups (p>0.05). The mineral density values of demineralized dentin were between 0.52-0.66 g/cm3 before caries removal, and 1.39-1.59 g/cm3 after removing caries. These values were found to be within the range of healthy dentin mineral density values again without any significant difference between groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, chemo-mechanical methods can be used effectively for removing the caries in the primary molar teeth similar to conservative treatments.

Together with developments in digital imaging systems, there has been increasing use of micro-computed tomography (μCT) in many areas, primarily in dentistry. As this method allows 3-dimensional images to be taken providing safe and high quality results, without damaging the samples being examined, it is often preferred. Consequently, it has become possible to record rapid progression in endodontic studies in particular and to research and easily compare several techniques. Furthermore, this method can be used in tissue engineering, forming data for FEM analysis, the growth and development of craniofacial bones, imaging bone structure, and in the evaluation of implants and surrounding bone in root tip surgery, to determine mineral concentration in the teeth and to measure the thickness of enamel. The aim of this review was to focus on the areas of use of μCT in dentistry and state the advantages.
