Nano silver/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel nanocomposites have been prepared using gamma irradiation technique. Gamma irradiation serves as a crosslinking agent for the polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels and also acts as a reducing agent for reduction of Ag+ ions to zero valent Ag0 within the polyvinyl alcohol crosslinked network. The microstructural characteristics of the prepared composites were studied using powder X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis. The data obtained by these characterizations indicate the homogeneous distribution of silver nanoparticles on the polyvinyl alcohol network. The swelling properties and mechanical parameters of the silver/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel nanocomposites tend to show improvements, making them a better material for wound care applications. The silver/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel nanocomposites have shown good antibacterial potential against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and shown nil or minimal cytotoxic effect on human melanoma (SK-MEL-2) and mouse melanoma (B16-F1) cell lines. Overall, it was concluded that under optimized condition, silver/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel nanocomposites synthesized using gamma irradiation technique are excellent candidates for wound dressing application.

Polyvinyl alcohol/lignosulfonate (PVA/LS) composite films have been prepared using casting technique. The effect of lignosulfonate concentrations (0.001, 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 wt %) on the optical and structural properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that, the addition of LS led to a more compact structure of PVA, which resulted in an increase in its refractive index and amorphous phase. This was associated with a reduction in the optical energy gap that could be attributed to the increase in disorder structural of the composites. Moreover, the transmittance of PVA/LS composite film decreased with the increase of LS doping concentrations onto the PVA matrix. The results reflect the proper dispersion of LS in the PVA matrix that causes a strong intermolecular interaction between LS and PVA suggesting strong hydrogen bond formation between the hydroxyl group in PVA chains and the outer site groups of LS. Further, the transmission of the samples in the wavelength range of 370-780 nm, as well as any color changes, was studied. The color intensity ΔE, which is the color difference between the pure PVA sample and those with different LS concentration, increases with increasing the LS content and was accompanied by an increase in the yellow and red color components. The gamma (γ) induced modifications in the synthesized Pani-Ag/PVA nanocomposite (NCP) thermal and optical characteristics have been depicted. The induced effect was investigated applying X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and UV-spectroscopy. Further, the color intensity (ΔE) of the irradiated NCP and blank has been estimated. The γ radiation decreases the optical band gap value from 2.65 to 1.54 eV owing to the randomly amorphous dominance in the irradiated NCP. Moreover, γ radiation induced noticeable defects generation, splitting the crystals, leading to depressed melting temperature.
