X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis of Valuable Metals

Abstract: This paper reviews the use of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS) for non-destructive studies of valuable metallic objects in the fields of jewelry, archaeology and art, as well as its application in the analysis of coatings and solutions, due to the interest of these issues in jewelry manufacture. The general features of the technique as well as the most outstanding results obtained in the commented fields are described, taking into account the most important sources of error, mainly in the case of samples… Show more

“…However, the number of current abstracts does not reflect the overall usefulness of the method. Jurado-Lopez and de Castro 28 published a review of papers (85 references) focused on precious metal analysis by XRF for jewellery, archaeology and art. In another report, EDXRF was used to analyse Ir-Pt, Rh-Pt, Rh-Pd-Pt, and Rh-Ir-Pt disk samples and Pt-Rh thermocouple wire.…”

“…Here we present a greatly simplified nondestructive x-ray fluorescence (XRF) readout of the composition profiles of alloy nanowires. XRF has been widely used in various fields for rapid and accurate nondestructive metal measurements without sample preparation. , The technique provides both qualitative and quantitative analyses and offers the simultaneous multielement nondestructive readout of samples over a wide concentration range to coins and jewelry …”
