X‐ray Diffraction Study of Soda‐boric Oxide Glass *

Abstract: X-ray diffraction patterns have been made of three samples of soda-boric oxide glass of the following molal compositions: 0.114 NaaO, 0.225 Na20, and 0.333 NazO. The patterns were made in an evacuated camera, using MoK Q radiation monochromated by reflection from rock salt. Radial distribution curves for the three compositions were obtained by Fourier analysis. The first peak of the distribution curves is due to the boron-oxygen separation. The distances are 1.37, 1.42, and 1.48A. From the peak areas, the numb… Show more

“…This method has been applied to several soda-silicate glasses [4], to potash silicate glasses [5], and to some soda silicate glasses containing lime [6]. Such work has been done, also, on some simple borate glasses [7], and phosphate glasses [8].…”

“…Shartsis, Capps, and Spinner [47] re mark , from other co nsiderations, that " the glass should act as if it were under pressure." Biscoe and Warre n [46] reported that the (B-O) distan ce first de creased and then increased progressively from 1.37 to 1. 48 A as modifier content of Na20 in B20 3 was in creased from 10 to 31 mole percent, and that the coordination of boron 8 also increased.…”

“…The effectiveness of soda content on the absorption spectra was less for the silicate glasses (as shown in Figure 39h) than for the borate glasses, because there is less structural change in sodium silicate glasses with higher al kali content (41). The B-0 band length will be considerably increased by adding more soda to borate glasses (19), while the Si-0 band length is less affected by addition of sodium oxide (92) . '…”
