X‐Ray Brillouin Scattering of Mössbauer Radiation by an Oscillating Quartz Crystal

Abstract: The elastic and inelastic scattering from x-cut quartz single crystal is investigated by means of Mossbaner diffractometry from the (1120) Bragg plane using a Wo-source and a Mossbauer ahsorber for the energy analysis. When the crystal is excited to piezo-electric vibrations in the MHzrange, inelastically scattered quanta are resolved. The phonon energies are in the range 40 neP < < ?&,< 150neV.MoSbauer y-Quanten einer 57Co-Quelle, die von einem X-Schnitt-Quarz-Einkristall an der (1 120)-Netzebene elastisch un… Show more

“…In the previous work which is related to the present paper we investigated the relativistic quadratic Doppler effect from resonance fluorescence scattering in iron pyrite FeS, [lo], the same effect in resonance backscattering from a stainless steel SS310 [ l l ] and the Mossbauer y-ray Brillouin scattering by an oscillating quartz crystal [6]. The modifications of our Mossbauer y-ray diffractometer for the more sophisticated applications of the present work are presented in Fig.…”

“…The spectroscopic analysis of the scattered radiation is performed with a "Fe enriched absorber as a resonance filter together with the Mossbauer radiation source on a transducer for energy analysis via Doppler effect. When compared with our previous experiments in quartz [6] we use now a highly improved mount of the quartz crystals which allows for better defined excitations in the energy scale. As a consequence of the improvement more sophisticated scattering experiments are possible.…”

“…Since we have been interested in our laboratory in the application of Mossbauer y-quanta in diffraction experiments, the role of relativistic effects in such experiments should be known for a refined interpretation. Among these diffraction experiments we mention the temperature dependent elastic and inelastic scattering from the molecular crystal NH,Br [6], the logarithmically divergent thermal diffuse scattering near the upper phase transition of KCN [7], the y-Brillouin scattering from an oscillating quartz crystal [8], and the interference between the nuclear resonance scattering and the electronic Rayleigh scattering from the iron containing compound Na,Fe(CN),NO . 2 H,O [9].…”
