Wuzi Yanzong pill, a Chinese polyherbal formula, alleviates testicular damage in mice induced by ionizing radiation

Abstract: BackgroundChinese medicine Wuzi Yanzong pill (WZYZP) was firstly documented in ancient Chinese medical works “She Sheng Zhong Miao Fang” by Shi-Che Zhang in 1550 AD. The traditional herbal formula is widely used in treating nephrasthenia lumbago, prospermia, erectile dysfunction and male sterility. The present study was to explore the effects of WZYZP on ionizing irradiation-induced testicular damage in mice.MethodsThe pelvic region of male mice was exposed to X-rays for inducing testicular damage. “…However, to our surprise, the DNA fragmentation index outcome from the same studies suggested that the WZYZ pill reduced DNA fragmentation index without heterogeneity. A recent study supported this finding on a molecular scale; Ji and his colleagues [ 29 ] found that WZYZ pill treatment enhanced the expression of PCNA protein that ubiquitinated and was involved in the RAD6-dependent DNA repair pathway, resulting in reduced DNA damage in rats.…”

“…Although L-carnitine can improve energy metabolism of sperm, no clearly effective drugs currently exist to treat male reproductive damage [8]. In China, doctors prescribe traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat male reproductive damage with good results [9]. However, to date, no monomer compound rooted in TCM has been used to treat male reproductive damage.…”

“…reproductive system, which may be responsible for the clinical efficacy of Shenjing capsule for male infertility. In addition, growing evidence has revealed that TCM can not only regulate the reproductive endocrine system, 63 but it can also regulate luteinizing hormone levels, 64 raise testosterone levels, 65 boost the function of Sertoli cells and Leydig cells, 66 prevent oxidative stress, 67,68 modulate the proliferation and apoptosis of germ cells, 67,68 and supplement trace elements. 69 With the continuous exploration of integrated TCM and Western medicine therapy, its advantages in male infertility treatment will be further highlighted.…”
