Wuhan Atmosphere Radio Exploration (WARE) radar: System design and online winds measurements

Abstract: [1] The basic configuration of the Wuhan MST (mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere) radar, which was designed and constructed by the School of Electronic Information, Wuhan University, is preliminarily described in this paper. The Wuhan MST radar operates at very high frequency (VHF) band (53.8 MHz) by observing the real-time characteristics of turbulence and the wind field vector in the height range of 3.5-90 km (not including 25-60 km) with high temporal and height resolutions. This all-solid-state, all-coher… Show more

“…The peak power of MST radar is beyond 170 kW transmitted through a 24 × 24 antenna array at operating frequency of 53.8 MHz. Zhao et al (2013) described technically the MST radar system in detail. The radar works by alternant three modes with different height resolutions.…”

“…After 3-month trial observations, it was put into routine operation in 2012. A detailed description of the radar including its specifications, signal processing, and data analysis is given by Zhao et al (2013). Here we only provide the primary parameters of the radar used for our study: the operating frequency is 53.8 MHz, the peak power is 172 kW, and the radar antenna system arranged in 24 × 24 square matrix is composed of 576 Yagi-Uda units with horizontal lin- ear polarization.…”

“…The phased array of the WARE radar consists of 24 × 24 threeelement Yagi-Uda antennas that cover an area of 10,000 m 2 . The WARE radar works with a frequency of 53.8 MHz, a peak power over 170 kW, and a power aperture area product of 2.0 × 10 8 W m 2 [Zhao et al, 2011[Zhao et al, , 2013. In terms of detection height, the radar works in three modes, which are (a) low mode: 3.0-10 km, range resolution of 150 m, vertical velocity resolution~0.14 m/s, and horizontal velocity resolution~0.49 m/s; (b) intermediate mode:…”
