The state of Kanesh was one of the state formations established in Asia Minor during the Bronze Age. It played a significant role in the process of formation and establishment of the Hittite state (mid-XVII century BC - early XII century BC). The city was the second center of the Hittite state after Kussara, and its territory served as a base for the further expansion of the Hittite state. It is important to emphasize that the city was also the capital and the center of the international trade network (in more than forty cities) organized by Assyrians. The state structure of Kanesh, its system of government also had an influence on the Hittite state system. All these lead us to study and explore the history of that city-state, to have an understanding of its state order, economy, and socio-economic relations.

ZusammenfassungIn den Jahren 2004 und 2005 kamen bei Arbeiten am sog. Totentempel Amenophis III. in Kom el-Hettan (Theben-West) verschiedene Fragmente von kolossalen beschrifteten Statuensockeln zutage. Diese ergänzen die schon bekannten, umfangreichen Fremdländerlisten aus dem Bereich dieses Tempels. Einige der in den Inschriften genannten Toponyme wurden inzwischen mit den Namen Asia, Ionia, Maeonia sowie mit dem aus hethitischen Quellen bekannten Land Luwiya in Verbindung gebracht. Der vorliegende Aufsatz bietet eine kritische Untersuchung dieser Identifikationen mit zwei Exkursen zu damit verbundenen Fragen der westkleinasiatischen Geographie der Hethiterzeit.

Writing and literacy are often associated with the rise of highly complex societies and the state and as such are generally considered to be a hallmark of ancient Near Eastern societies. While such correlations are indisputable, there is little agreement on matters of causality, process, and function, or on the status of literacy in ancient polities. In the ancient Near East literacy was always restricted, and its scope and power were in constant flux. It was an established factor in economic and social interaction. As a marker of status, authority, and control it was embedded in the omnipresent displays of royal writing that were there for all to see, most significantly by illiterates.
