Wrist arthroscopy in the management of articular distal radius fractures

Abstract: There is need to perform randomized controlled trials reporting on the use of volar locking plates as, at the present time, they are the standard management for these fractures. In addition, the different pattern of fracture should be better classified to manage the patients who will benefit after the management.

“…This hypothesis is also underlined by the incidence of accompanying injuries in distal radius fractures. The data about accompanying injuries in distal radius fractures vary according to the literature [19]. We found an incidence of concomitant injuries in 70% of the patients studied.…”

“…Also, the authors did not compare outcomes between patients with isolated DRFs and patients with DRFs with concomitant ligament injury. 52 53 Likewise, Fowler performed a non-systematic review on SL and lunotriquetral ligament injuries associated with acute DRFs. The effect on the development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis was not addressed in this article.…”

“…In our hospital, it was usually treated by trauma surgeons, which might explain the relatively low proportion in this study conducted by hand surgeons. The promising role of wrist arthroscopy in the treatment of distal radius fracture has been reported recently 12,17 .…”

“…Osseous procedures include partial bone resections in scaphotrapeziotrapezoid (STT) and ulnocarpal or ulnostyloid impaction syndrome 7,11 . The method has also gained wider acceptance in more sophisticated procedures as assisting reduction of intra-articular distal radius fractures 12 , or scaphoid fractures, and in posttraumatic sequelae 13,14 . Arthroscopically assisted osteotomy in intra-articular distal radius malunions, treatment of scaphoid nonunions and arthroscopic arthrolysis has been described 5,15 .…”
