Wrist arthrography: a simple method

Abstract: A technique of wrist arthrography is presented using an adhesive marker-plate with radiopaque coordinates to identify precisely sites for puncture arthrography of the wrist and to obviate the need for fluoroscopic guidance. Radiocarpal joint arthrography was performed successfully in all 24 cases, 14 in the cadaveric wrists and 10 in the live patients. The arthrographic procedure described in this study is simple, safe, and rapid, and has the advantage of precise localisation of the site for puncture without n… Show more

“…For this reason, the injection of intra-articular contrast media has been justified [10]. MR arthrography combines the advantage of conventional MR imaging with that of arthrography by improving the visualization of small structures, such as the intrinsic ligaments of the wrist [9, 10, 16]. Tricompartmental arthrographic injection of the wrist, as suggested by Robinson et al, has been reported to allow best evaluation of the intrinsic ligaments [17].…”

“…In the classic technique, the contrast agent is firstly injected into the midcarpal and distal radioulnar joints under fluoroscopic control, followed by the arthrography of the radiocarpal joint two hours later. A modified procedure uses an adhesive marker-plate with radiopaque coordinates for simple puncture guidance [46]. Wrist arthrography enables the detection of communication defects with high sensitivity [45], but hampers from low specificity rates due to the inability to differentiate nonsymptomatic central defects from lesions of the peripheral ligament segments [44].…”
