Wrinkled graphene: synthesis and characterization of few layer graphene-like nanocarbons from kerosene

Abstract: Wrinkled graphene, derived from a facile thermal decomposition and chemical method, was subjected to various analysis techniques and the results have been reported here. Raman studies revealed the presence of highly graphitized amorphous carbon, which was evident by the appearance of five peaks in the deconvoluted first order spectrum. This result was very well corroborated by the XRD analysis. XPS and FT-IR spectra confirmed the incorporation of oxygen functionalities into the carbon backbone. AFM and SEM ima… Show more

“…The D band (at 1380 cm -1 ) is due to the delocalized π states around the sp 2 chains [4,15,18]. The intensity ratio (I D /I G ) is a measure of defect quantity in graphitic materials is found to be 0.54 indicating low defect.…”

“…Graphene is synthesized from variety of precursors like graphite, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, carbon fibres and activated carbon. Physical approach such as mechanical exfoliation, lithography and other approaches such as hydrothermal treatment, electrochemical oxidation, proton ablation and chemical oxidation have been used for the synthesis of graphene [4,5]. However, most of the above stated precursors and production methods are too expensive and are optimized for the production of graphene with a homogenous sp 2 phase [6,7].…”

“…The structural parameters are elucidated and depicted in Table-1. The typical 2θ values for the sp 2 carbon forms of the (002) planes occur at approximately 25°, which constitutes the π band. However, there is a marked broadening of the peak, which can be attributed to the γ band, formed due to aliphatic [2][3][4][5][6]. Lattice strain can also result in the broadening of the peak, but due to the small particle size, this effect is negligible.…”

“…The 2D band originates from the double resonance process and hence, appears to be dispersing in nature. In addition to these bands, a D band is noticed at 1350 cm −1 which arises due to the proximity of defect or diamond like structure [2][3][4]. The sp 3 carbon network shows characteristic Raman features, prominently at 1148 cm −1 and secondary peaks at 1274 cm −1 and 1307 cm −1 (owing to tetrahedral amorphous carbon-ta-C) for sub-bituminous coal [13].…”

“…With the industrial revolution, coal has turned out to be a vital energy source across the globe. Besides as an energy source, it is utilized as an important and vital reserve for the manufacturing of chemicals such as creosote oil, naphthalene, phenol and benzene [1][2][3][4][5]. With the discovery of carbon nanomaterials, scientific research on coal based products have received ever increasing attention [6][7][8].…”
