“…In this population, the majority of penetrating trauma in dogs is caused by bite wounds 3 . These wounds are often appendicular and can often be managed with open wound management or primary closure not requiring an OR 12 . This is in contrast to blunt trauma that is more likely to involve the thoracic or abdominal cavities in which surgical procedures should only be done in a sterile operating suite 11 .…”
Objective: To evaluate outcome (survival to discharge) among trauma types (blunt, penetrating, both) in dogs. The secondary objective was to evaluate if other trauma registry parameters differ between trauma types and influence survival.

Traumatic wounds are among the most common of presentations in small animal practice. Wounds all heal by passing through phases which have been extensively described in the literature. Recognition and understanding of the underlying mechanisms of these phases are essential to an appreciation of the input necessary from the clinician to optimise outcome. Wound management should aim to facilitate and modulate the processes that occur naturally; the clinician should be aiming to provide the ideal environment for these processes to occur, and be prepared to intervene and manage the wound where obvious impediments exist.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
