Wound healing activity of silibinin in mice

Abstract: Background:Silibinin is a semi-purified fraction of silymarin contained in milk thistle (Silybum marianum Asteraceae). Primarily known for its hepatoprotective actions, silymarin may also stimulate epithelialization and reduce inflammation in excision wound. Previous studies show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial actions of silibinin. However, wound healing property of silibinin is not well studied. Objective:This study investigates wound healing activity of silibinin topical formulation.Materia… Show more

“…During inflammation, the induction of chemokine IL-8 expression requires the cooperative transcriptional activity of both NF-κB and AP-1 factors [39]. According to our results, DHS dose-dependently induced AP-1 activation after prolonged exposure.…”

“…NF-κB and AP-1 are transcription factors related to an inflammatory process. These factors are strongly implicated in an initiation of pro-inflammatory target gene expression, e.g., IL-6, IL-8 or COX-2 [13,38,39]. Therefore, we determined the protein levels of the aforementioned factors NF-κB (subunit p65) and AP-1 (subunit c-Jun) by Western blotting using the same experimental conditions (Figure 3a,b,d).…”

“…The treatment was given based on the documented procedures. [83][84][85] The mice were anesthetized using subcutaneous injection of ketamine (80 mg/kg) and diazepam (5 mg/kg) on wounding day. The back hair of the animals was removed by shaving.…”

“…This action was associated with an inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammation ( Jain et al, 2015 ). As shown in another study, the repeated topical application (14 days treatment) of a silibinin-based gel resulted in an efficient wound healing strategy, by acting on tissue re-epithelization, collagen production, and deposition of granulation tissue (as shown in Figure 2 ) ( Samanta et al, 2016 ).…”
