Wound healing activity of methanolic stem extract of Musa paradisiaca Linn. (Banana) in Wistar albino rats

Abstract: This study is designed to explore the phytochemical, antibacterial and wound healing activity of methanolic stem extract of Musa paradisiaca Linn. (Banana). The phytochemical analysis was performed for the methanolic stem extract of Musa paradisiaca Linn. Results indicates that the Musa paradisiaca Linn. was rich in glucosides, tannins and alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids and phenols were present in moderate quantities. The extract shows antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus a… Show more

“…gastrointestinal and dermatological pathogens): in vitro MIC of 15.6-125.0 mg/ml organic leaf extracts against nine bacterial strains (Karuppiah and Mustaffa, 2013). Wound healing: banana leaf wound dressings compared positively to paraffin gauze in 3 clinical trials, as reviewed (Benskin, 2013); the topically application of methanolic stem extract significantly improved wound healing in rats in comparison to control (Amutha and Selvakumari, 2016). Antileishmaniasis: significant in vitro activity of different fractions of fruit peel extracts against L. infantum chagasi promastigotes and amastigotes (Accioly et al, 2012;Silva et al, 2014).…”

“…When rats with colitis were treated with green banana flour, they showed an improvement in the colonic oxidative status and anti-inflammatory activity [15]. Methanolic extracts found in green bananas also promote better wound healing in rats [16,17]. Furthermore, a significant reduction of glutathione concentration in granulation tissues, percentage of wound area and increase in wound breaking strength [16] were observed in rats on a green banana diet.…”

“…For example banana leaf extracts from different species of Musa bananas have anti-bacterial activities, with Musa paradisiaca followed by Musa acuminata being the most active against multi-drug resistant nosocomial infection causing pathogens [29]. Musa paradisiaca species also demonstrates anti-bacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus [17] and anti-coccidial activity in chickens [30]. In addition, banana peel extracts show anti-microbial activities against P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans [31].…”
