Would Mothers Relax Their Degree of Selectivity for Supports Suitable for Egg-Laying When the Local Density of Conspecific Females Increases? A Case Study with Three Common Lepidopteran Leaf Miners

Abstract: Selecting suitable supports for egg-laying, among host species and host individuals, as well as between leaves of various qualities within a preferred host, is a major component of prehatching maternal care in herbivore insects. This feature is especially important for those species having a tightly concealed larval stage, such as leaf miners. Yet, increasing density of neighbouring conspecific females may possibly induce ovipositing mothers to relax their degree of selectivity, so as to distribute their eggs … Show more

“…The clutch-size nc proves to be independent of leaf-acceptance ratio α, and, in addition, both α and nc vary independently of µ and, thus, feature insensitive to local mothers' density [4,[9][10]. Accordingly, any given level of mining impact may thus result from a virtually infinite variety of combinations of values of α, nc, µ.…”

“…Insects have a certain selectivity to different hosts (Roslin et al 2006;Gripenberg 2007;Jin et al 2008;Béguinot 2012), and at different stages, insects will select different hosts based on their purpose; e.g., breeding adults will select a suitable "nest" (Roslin et al 2006;Gripenberg 2007;Béguinot 2012). Selection tests showed that the amount of H. armigera adult oviposition decreased on cotton plants stressed in high NaCl stress under closed conditions.…”
