Worldwide research productivity in the field of psychiatry

Abstract: BackgroundThe field of psychiatry has seen significant progress in recent years due to worldwide contributions. National productivity, however, in the field of psychiatry is still unclear. In our study, we investigated contributions of individual nations to the field of psychiatry.MethodsThe Web of Science was used to perform a search from 2011 to 2015 on the subject category “psychiatry”. The total number of articles, citations and the per capita numbers were obtained to analyze the contributions of different… Show more

“…These results match those observed in earlier bibliometric studies, These findings were expected because the USA has been recognized for its various and high‐quality international journals, scientists, and institutions in different fields of science . Other possible explanations for this, as suggested by previous studies, are that research outputs are positively correlated with a country's rapid economic development, population size, medical infrastructure, or academic investment. Furthermore, paraquat was still responsible for most cases of all pesticide deaths reported cases in the American Association of Poison Control Centers in 2009 …”

“…It seems that smaller countries, especially Scandinavian ones, tend to be more productive per capita, while larger countries are more productive in the total number of published papers. A similar phenomenon was observed in research literature production in psychiatry (Zhang et al, ) and paracetamol poisoning (Zyoud, Al‐Jabi, & Sweileh, ). It is interesting to note that, among the 20 most productive countries, only 5 are G8 countries.…”

“…Similar results were found for dental research, for which, in addition, political stability was a significant factor influencing research literature production (Allareddy et al, ). A positive correlation between GDP and number of papers was also found in psychiatry (Zhang et al, ), paracetamol poisoning (Zyoud et al, ), arthroscopy (Liang et al, ), and endocrinology (Zhao et al, ). Indeed, it is known that developing countries, due to lack of resources, inadequate representation in journal editors' boards, and lack of international collaboration, contribute less to research literature production than developed countries (Chu, Jayaraman, Kyamanywa, & Ntakiyiruta, ; Langer, Díaz‐Olavarrieta, Berdichevsky, & Villar, ; Sooryamoorthy, ).…”

“…Bibliometrics and evaluation of research performance have been carried out on a wide range of health topics [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15], and several have been carried out in the fields of environmental studies [16,17], and toxicology [18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. Yet, to the best of my knowledge, only a few bibliometric studies in food contamination have been done recently [25][26][27][28], and only one bibliometric study explicitly focused on aflatoxin has been published by using Web of Science (WoS) database for data collection [28].…”
