Worldwide Research on Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in Public Buildings

Abstract: Abstract:The present study details the significant contribution that different international institutions have made to the field of sustainability and energy efficiency, with a focus on public buildings. This has been achieved by making use of the database Scopus, by applying bibliometric techniques and by analyzing the contents of articles published from 1976 to 2016. All the materials included in the analysis have been reported from Scopus. Several key aspects of the publications have been considered such as… Show more

“…Increasing energy demand, the changing climate, and energy resources limitations have prompted several countries to introduce strategies to enhance energy-efficiency and production sustainability. The construction and ongoing use of the built environment are substantial contributors to growing energy demand, using from 20 to 40% of the energy consumed in developed countries and accounting for more than 30% of total greenhouse emissions [1,2]. In Europe, the Directive on Energy Performance of Buildings [3] states that all new constructions should be "zero-energy buildings" by the end of 2020.…”

“…Buildings are a main source of global energy consumption and CO 2 emissions; accounting for about 40% of global energy consumption [1,2] The international contribution to sustainability has generated a large number of publications in relevant journals and conferences over the last four decades [3] and has established a dire need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions [4][5][6] as these gases are potential causes of threats to the ecosystem such as global warming [7][8][9][10]. From the Kyoto protocol of 1997 to the Paris Agreement of 2015, various policy directions have been motivated to mitigate international environmental pollution.…”
