Worlds within worlds: evolution of the vertebrate gut microbiota

Abstract: Here we use published 16S rRNA gene sequences to compare the bacterial assemblages associated with humans, other mammals, other metazoa, and free-living microbial communities spanning a range of environmental conditions. The composition of the vertebrate gut microbiota is influenced by diet, host morphology and phylogeny, and in this respect the human gut bacterial community is typical for an omnivorous primate. However, a wider view reveals that the vertebrate gut microbiota is highly differentiated from free… Show more

“…Studies on the evolution of mammals and their gut microbes by DNA sequencing also indicate that the diet is a fundamental promoter of change in gut bacterial diversity (18) . Altogether, this evidence supports the hypothesis that the modulation of gut microbiota via dietary intervention is a potential strategy to help manage obesity and metabolic-associated disorders (10,16,17) , although actual proof is still limited.…”

“…Intestinal microbiota is known as an indicator of health (12). The relative amount of main intestinal bacteria and their metabolites are usually analyzed, as any peroral food tends to affect on intestinal microbiota (11).…”

“…However, intestinal microbiota analysis of intestinal contents cannot be readily available. Fortunately, the change of fecal microbiota can reflect the change of intestinal microbiota (6,12). So, in this study, fecal samples were used to evaluate effects of GM Lp 590 as a model GMM on intestinal microbiota and their metabolites.…”

“…La composition de cette microflore varie selon les grandes catégories de régime alimentaire (régimes carnivore, herbivore et omnivore). Dans le cas des animaux herbivores et omnivores, les bactéries de la flore sont particulièrement prolixes en enzymes impliquées dans la digestion des polysaccharides de plantes terrestres [6]. Enfin les échanges de matériel généti-que sont assez fréquents entre bactéries intestinales [7].…”
