World volume noncommutativity versus target space noncommutativity

Abstract: It is known that the noncommutativity of D-brane coordinate is responsible for describing the higher-dimensional D-branes in terms of more fundamental ones such as D-particles or D-instantons, while considering a noncommutative torus as a target space is conjectured to be equivalent to introducing the background antisymmetric tensor field in matrix models. In the present paper we clarify the dual nature of both descriptions. Namely the noncommutativity of conjugate momenta of the D-brane coordinates realizes t… Show more

“…The latter picture is widely used in constructing gauge theories on the dual torus in terms of matrix models of D0-branes, but the complete description in terms of boundary states is not clear, as opposed to the R 2 case [42]. There are some previous attempts [43,44] on this subject for a torus. Once it is known, the connection of the T-duality and the Morita equivalence becomes more transparent.…”

“…where the BRST charge Q is constructed from the world sheet action (3.1). The theory (5.1) gives the noncommutative U(1) Yang-Mills theory in the low energy region in the same sense as Witten's open string field theory in the case of the Neumann boundary condition leads to the ordinary U(1) Yang-Mills theory in the low energy limit 9 . In ref.…”

“…Thus it is likely that the existence of components of B ′ ij along compact directions which cannot be gauged away is essential to define the momentum noncommutativity in a well-defined manner. § Although in [5] the configuration is compactified on T 2 as mentioned in the above footnote, a similar argument also works in this case.…”
