Abstract

Stamp collecting is one of the most popular hobbies in the world. Started shortly after the first adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black, was issued by the British on May 6, 1840, the hobby is well over a century old. Many well-known dignitaries, including King George V of England and Franklin D. Roosevelt, did much to popularize stamp collecting which has become known as the "hobby of kings and the king of hobbies." Stamps, the world over, are printed in exquisite designs and colors and on a multitude of topics. The hobbyist has a wide choice for specializing in different topical areas. Stamps portraying animal life, sports events, aviation, famous paintings and historical persons are but a few of the areas in which he may become interested. In line with our profession, the topical area of meteorology and atmospheric physics is explored.
