World Catalog of the Family Tethinidae (Diptera)

Abstract: Mathis, Wayne N., and Lorenzo Munari. World Catalog of the Family Tethinidae (Diptera). Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology, number 584,27 pages, frontispiece, 1996.-All genera and species of the dipterous family Tethinidae are cataloged. Included are 126 species and 14 genera that are arranged within a classification of five subfamilies. The distribution of each species is given by major zoogeographic region(s) and country(ies) within each region. Information on the natural history, as available in the liter… Show more

“…I agree with D.K. McAlpine (2006) that the Tethinidae, as defined currently (see Mathis & Munari, 1996), are almost certainly paraphyletic with regard to the Canacidae. I am therefore combining the two families for the current analysis.…”

“…), sternite 7 was lost. Some authors (Wirth, 1987; Mathis & Munari, 1996; Brake, 2000) speculated that the symmetrical pregenital sclerite of Canacidae might include remnants of sternite 7, but I agree with D.K. McAlpine (2006) that there is no evidence to support this.…”

“…Krogerus (1932) is mentioned as the source for the Tethina grisea record; there is no listed source for the record of Tethina illota . An older version of the world catalogue (Mathis and Munari 1996) mentions only Tethina grisea from Finland. No Finnish specimens of these species could be found in the Finnish Museum of Natural History (MZH) where most of the material collected by Krogerus is kept, or in any other Finnish insect collection.…”

“…The historical record concerning Canacidae from Brazil began slightly more than a century ago when Williston (1896) described two species ( Anthomyza cinerea (= Tethina willistoni (Melander)) and Rhicnoessa xanthopoda ) from specimens collected on the island of St. Vincent (Caribbean). During the intervening 100 years, another species, Tethina albula (Loew), had been reported from Brazil ( Melander 1952 ; Mathis and Munari 1996 ) but was apparently based on a misidentification. We have not examined any specimens of Tethina albula , and all specimens that are light colored, including mostly pale setae, are Tethina willistoni .…”
