Worksite Physical Activity Intervention for Ambulatory Clinic Nursing Staff

Abstract: Health behaviors, including physical activity (PA), of registered nurses (RNs) and medical assistants (MAs) are suboptimal but may improve with worksite programs. Using a repeated-measures crossover design, the authors explored if integrating a 6-month worksite non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) intervention, with and without personalized health coaching via text messaging into workflow could positively affect sedentary time, PA, and body composition of nursing staff without jeopardizing work productiv… Show more

“…As such, increased physical activity is one avenue through which shift workers might forestall and mitigate the cardiometabolic effects of circadian misalignment and sleep loss. To date, researchers have investigated a number of exercise interventions in the workplace, varying in intensity from extremely vigorous to moderate, of differing effectiveness (Dishman, Oldenburg, O'Neal, & Shephard, ; Kahn et al., ; Shephard, ; Tucker et al., ; White & Jacques, ). However, there is very little research on the health outcomes of such interventions for shift workers specifically; where shift workers have been studied, the findings are mixed (Atkinson, Fullick, Grindey, & Maclaren, ).…”

“…Most of the following interventions' efficacy has been proven in randomized controlled trials. Worksite interventions like providing nurses a treadmill at work or Wii system, walking meetings, or health coaching via text messages [83] show a positive effect on nurses' physical activity. Musculoskeletal complaints that often emerged from psychosocial stressors in the nursing context can be significantly reduced by a combination of coaching interventions, focusing on enabling better strategies for coping and physiotherapy [84].…”
