Workshops of the Fifth International Brain-Computer Interface Meeting: Defining the Future

Abstract: The Fifth International Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Meeting met June 3–7th, 2013 at the Asilomar Conference Grounds, Pacific Grove, California. The conference included 19 workshops covering topics in brain-computer interface and brain-machine interface research. Topics included translation of BCIs into clinical use, standardization and certification, types of brain activity to use for BCI, recording methods, the effects of plasticity, special interest topics in BCIs applications, and future BCI directions. … Show more

“…This drawback limits the dissemination of MI-BCIs for widespread application. Provision of optimum feedback is believed to improve MI-BCI performance metrics [5]. Proprioceptive feedback, visual feedback, or different combinations thereof are among the most common feedback modalities in MI-BCIs [6].…”

“…He has published his thoughts about BCI for AAC in Speak Up , the publication of the United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (Bieker, Noethe, & Fried-Oken, 2011). GB attended the 2013 International Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Meeting in Monterey, CA where he presented a workshop on AAC for BCI (Huggins et al, 2014) and participated in the BCI Users’ Forum in front of 350 conference participants (Peters et al, 2014). Of note, all presentations were prepared using partner-assisted auditory scanning.…”

“…In this section we try to establish benchmark criteria for selection of the various techniques being used by BCI researchers. The international meetings on brain computer interface technology (Wolpaw et al, 2000), , (Vaughan and Wolpaw, 2006) (Vaughan and Wolpaw, 2011), and (Huggins et al, 2014) have been instrumental in providing a forum for research and clinical experts. The discussions at such meetings have been documented and have helped in in identifying the desirable characteristics of these techniques.…”
