WorkPlan: Constraint-Based Database for Work Package Scheduling

Abstract: A database program called WorkPlan has been created to systematically develop weekly work plans. Such work plans are used by crew foremen in scheduling work packages and allocating available labor and equipment resources. WorkPlan adopts the Last Planner methodology, which implements several lean construction techniques. A week prior to conducting work, WorkPlan guides the user step by step through the process of spelling out work packages, identifying constraints, checking constraint satisfaction, releasing w… Show more

“…From these questions combined with the knowledge gathered from earlier research in production system design, we started developing an understanding of the basic ingredients that are needed in a planning tool to support the development of a materials management strategy. Thus, our revised spreadsheet represents the first draft of such a planning tool that builds on developments in space scheduling, extending the work of Choo and Tommelein (1999), Frandson and Tommelein (2014), and Cheng and Kumar (2015).…”

“…In this regard, Hammer (1990) emphasised the need to re-engineer the information process, terming this "capturing information once and at the source". Choo et al (1998) applied Hammer's (1990 advice in the development of the lean application to generate the Weekly Work Plan (WWP) in the Work Plan database. In the same vein, Kim (2014) focused on the use of the related data.…”

“…Building upon the key concepts in lean construction, Choo et al [7] describe a database application, "WorkPlan", for assigning and tracking constraints against crew level work packages. Although certainly a major step in the right direction, the application described still requires constraints to be manually identified and tracked.…”
