Introduction: Workplace violence is one of the main risk factors in the professional world. Healthcare workers are at higher risk when compared to other sectors. Our study aimed to characterize physical and verbal violence in a public hospital and to define occupational health prevention and surveillance strategies.Material and Methods: Single center observational cross-sectional study, carried amongst healthcare workers in a public hospital in Lisbon. A qualitative survey was carried out through six in-depth interviews. A quantitative survey was carried through questionnaires delivered to 32 workers. A significance level of 5% was accepted in the assessment of statistical differences. The Mann-Whitney test and the Fisher’s exact test were used to calculate p values.Results: The main results are: (1) 41 violence incidents were reported in the quantitative phase; (2) 5/21 [23.81%] victims notified the incident to the occupational health department; (3) 18/21 [85.71%] victims reported a permanent state of hypervigilance; (4) 22/28 [78.57%] participants self-reported poor or no familiarity with internal reporting procedures; (5) 24/28 [85.71%] participants believed it is possible to minimize workplace violence.Discussion: Workplace violence is favored by unrestricted access to working areas, absence of security guards and police officers or scarce intervention. The low notification rate contributes to organizational lack of action. The state of hypervigilance reported in our study reflects the negative effects of threatening occupational stressors on mental health.Conclusion: Our results show that workplace violence is a relevant risk factor that significantly impacts workers’ health in a noxious manner, deserving a tailored occupational health approach whose priority areas and strategies have been determined.

Objectives: Learning from incident reporting systems is one core strategy to develop a culture of safety for healthcare workers and patients. The aim of this retrospective study was to explore patient injuries focussing on falls. Furthermore, on healthcare workers incidents, injuries and the situations they occurred. Method: A total of 65,749 patient risks and incidents were registered in the incident reporting system between 2011 and 2014. Of these, 11,006 were classified as an injury to a patient. Risks and incidents were registered and analysed for 1702 healthcare workers. Results: Fifteen percent of the patient injuries required treatment. Falls were reported in 17% of the cases. Patients fell mainly in unassisted situations. Healthcare workers' incidents and injuries were registered mainly by nurses and assistant nurses. Sixteen percent of the injuries required treatment. Prevalence of incidents was on an average 3.5% each year. Common injuries were: needle stick, workplace violence, injuries during patient manual handling. The patient was present in 74% of all incidents. Conclusion: Patient and healthcare workers injuries are still prevalent in Swedish healthcare and a substantial part of the incidents involved a patient situation. Collaboration between employers, employees and patient representatives is needed to increase awareness of safety in healthcare.

The Effect of Workplace Violence on Depression among Medical Staffs in China: The Mediating Role of Interpersonal Trust

Background: Workplace violence has been recognized globally as a serious occupational hazard in health services occupations, and existing studies have identified that workplace violence can significantly lead to depression. Interpersonal trust, an important topic, also has been proved associated with workplace violence and depression. However, the moderating effect of interpersonal trust has not been tested before, which can help us to further understand the effect mechanism of workplace violence on depression. Method: In the current study, we collected 3,426 valid questionnaires based on a cross-sectional design among medical staff in Chinese hospitals. Depression, workplace violence, interpersonal trust, social support, physical diseases, and some other social-demographic variables were evaluated. Results: The data analyzed in the current study supported that there were 52.2% of medical staff experienced workplace violence before. Experiencing verbal violence (b=2.99, p<0.001), experiencing physical violence (b=3.70, p<0.01), experiencing both kinds of the violence (b=4.84, p<0.001), high level of interpersonal trust (b=0.22, p<0.001), nursing (b=1.10, p<0.05), manager (b=-1.72, p<0.001), suffering physical disease (b=3.35, p<0.001), social support (b=-0.23, p<0.001) were significantly associated with depression. Interpersonal trust had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between workplace violence and depression. Conclusion: Interpersonal trust can be a mediator between workplace violence and depression. Some potential strategies would be beneficial to promoting the mental health status among medical staff.
